NOTE: We are temporarily not allowed to call this product “certified organic”. Just prior to the COVID-19 crisis, Breadtopia moved to a new facility and now, due to health safety concerns, all organic certification inspections have been put on hold in our area. Our prior facility was certified organic and our new one will be as soon as inspections begin again. Until that time, know that we are still sourcing exactly the same certified organic grains from the same producers we always have, and we are packaging and milling with the same procedures we have always used. We just can’t call it “certified organic” until we can get our new facility inspected and certified.

These are whole unmilled berries.

Whole rye is another grain that delivers a unique combination of rich, hearty taste and enormous health benefits.

Just 1/2 cup of whole rye flour provides 1/3 of the daily recommended fiber intake, making rye one the highest fiber sources of any food. Rye is also high in protein and provides a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals including sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, manganese, iron, cobalt, copper, zinc, chrome, phosphorus, iodine, boron, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B8, B9.

Rye has been used in bread baking for centuries. While high in protein, it’s low in gluten so makes for a very dense loaf of bread if not combined with higher gluten flours. 100% rye bread, such as traditional pumpernickel, can often be tolerated by those with wheat sensitivities.

Our grain is grown by family-owned and operated farms — certified organic farms that are committed to ideals of sustainable stewardship of our natural resources for those of future generations.

    Breadtopia is not really local in Connecticut – which used to be a great rye producer. So I found myself a local farmer and even paid extra for that 50# bag of rye berries. Sadly, the quality is not good enough for human consumption. Breadtopia’s quality in contrast is alway top notch for all their products. I admire you guys – keep up the great work.

    I bought my first rye flour in 2015 from Breadtopia. I switched to the whole grain after I got my Mock Mill. I would never buy rye anywhere else. The grains keep perfectly in my pantry and they always grind to a perfect fresh flour. I love to add rye to almost any bread I make for the depth of flavor and the earthy crust. Love Breadtopia !

    I am working my way through a #35 pound bucket of this rye and it’s been a pleasure. I have a rye sourdough starter and love rye in all my baked goods. My only wish is that they’d list what variety of rye they are selling.

    Product Quality: 5 stars. Rye berries are fresh. Milled flour has distinctive Rye smell.
    Service: 5 stars Shipment was fast. Though the plastic bag arrived broken. I didn’t notice it and spilled some berries. That didn’t bother me much.
    Environmental Consciousness: Poor. That is the reason I gave it 4 star (though I really want to give it 3 stars I don’t want to be too harsh). The merchandiser buys bulk and repacks and it promotes healthy baking and healthy life style. The plastic bags are one of the worst kind. They could have and should have used paper packaging for grains. King Arthur uses paper for their flour. I don’t see any reason they can’t just put some small effort on using more environmental-friendly packaging.

      Thanks for your feedback. We’ve been doing considerable research and testing of compostable bags that are strong enough to survive the rigors of shipping. It’s a huge challenge. We think we have finally found that bag and will be switching to it as soon as we run through our current inventory of plastic bags.

    100% whole grain, sourdough rye bread with lots of seeds mixed in is the most common bread I bake and eat. It’s even more flavorful and delicious when I mill it fresh – the flour smells fresh and grassy. Makes a great dark rye in your pumpernickel, rugbrod, etc. varieties. Also adds depth of flavor to cakes, I particularly like mixing in some fresh rye flour in to honey cakes.
