NOTE: We are temporarily not allowed to call this product “certified organic”. Just prior to the COVID-19 crisis, Breadtopia moved to a new facility and now, due to health safety concerns, all organic certification inspections have been put on hold in our area. Our prior facility was certified organic and our new one will be as soon as inspections begin again. Until that time, know that we are still sourcing exactly the same certified organic grains from the same producers we always have, and we are packaging and milling with the same procedures we have always used. We just can’t call it “certified organic” until we can get our new facility inspected and certified.

Groats are the hulled kernels of various cereal grains, such as oat, wheat, rye, and barley. Oat groat are high in dietary fiber and iron.

Oat groats have a nutty flavor and chewy texture enjoyed as a hot breakfast cereal, and also in pilafs, salads, stews.

  • Steel cut oats are whole oat groats that are cut into 2 or 3 pieces. If you’re cooking whole oat groats in a pressure cooker, allow about twice the cooking time as with steel cut. Or Mockmill them on course grind and cook the same as steel cut.
  • Use your home mill to grind groats into fresh oat flour.
  • For the best tasting, freshest and most nutritious rolled oats or muesli, run whole oat groats through a flaker. Good stuff.

One of Eric’s favorite Instant Pot (or any pressure cooker) breakfast recipes:

Sauté a cup of cracked (in Mockmill) oat groats in 2 tablespoons of butter for a few minutes, stirring several times.
Add 2 1/4 cups of water.
Stir in 1 tsp cinnamon.
Add a pinch of salt.
Add a Granny Smith apple cut into ~ 3/4″ pieces
Add raisins to suit. (optionally – craisins, prunes, etc)

Cook on high pressure for 7 minutes then let pot sit until pressure releases naturally (about 12 minutes).

Makes about 3 servings.

I had previously purchased a 35 lb bucket of whole oat groats from an organic farmer, whose farming practices I love but there was too much chaff left in the groats. My husband has been struggling with diverticulitis and the chaff is a problem for him so I usually do steel cut oats for him without issues. My father cleaned grains as his life’s work and the finished product was always super clean and ready to use so I may be a little picky but that’s the measuring stick I go by. I purchased a 5 lb bag from Breadtopia and couldn’t be happier. I just flaked some in my Mockmill flaker and added some precooked quinoa and a little bit of freshly ground flax, chopped apples and cinnamon and of course pure maple syrup. Delicious, no chaff and I think husband will be able to digest this oatmeal without issues. I make enough to put in silicone freezer container with individual serving sizes. After they are frozen Pop them out and store in a gallon size freezer bag so whoever wants oatmeal in the morning can take one and pop in microwaveable bowl, cook for a couple of minutes and save me some morning work. Excellent oat groats from Breadtopia!

Outstanding! This is my second time ordering. I got 10# this time. I have a flaker and make my own rolled oats. They cook up do quickly and taste so fresh and are very creamy. We use them several times a week! Awesome product

These are the best!! The have the most wonderful flavor and flake great. I bought another reputable brand after trying these. I wanted a bulk size cx 5lb bag. They don’t have much flavor and are a crumbly mess after flaking. They are marginally better if I soak in a bit of water overnight. Breadtopia oat groats are superb. Please package in bigger sizes besides 5lb bags.

I’ve tried buying oats from a few places and these are by far the best. They’re very high quality, clean and no dust, rocks, hulls or other grains/peas. Delicious flavor, super fresh. Will definitely be buying more!!

For years, I purchased oat groats from a well-known brand, and they were very good. These are better. The groats look and taste fresher than the ones I used to buy and I appreciate the resealable bag.

These oat groats are a slightly smaller variety than I’ve seen before but still very nice. No rocks encountered, no stray hulls. A very high quality product.
