Says Ramona Button: “I am excited to share the food traditions of my tribe, the Akimel O’Odham (Gila River Pima) Community. My people have lived and farmed in this desert region for centuries. I am happy to be able to invite you to try the foods from my farm and from my tradition.
Ramona’s American Indian Foods, LLC is a Native American (Akimel O’Odham) business. I have been farming land here in Sacaton, Arizona for over forty years with my husband Terry and am pleased to bring you my traditional food products.”
At Breadtopia, we are carrying two specialty heirloom wheats from Ramona Farms. Pima Club Wheat Berries and White Sonora Wheat Berries, both of which have unique qualities that make them wonderful to use for baking. We also mill these berries to order in the form of whole grain and high extraction flour. Certified organic by CCOF, Ramona grows their grains traditionally, using no GMO products, no pesticides, and no herbicides.
Ramona continues, “We are located in Sacaton, Arizona. A Community on the Gila River reservation in Arizona – the population of this reservation of about 584 square miles is about 15,000 people.
Life here is still very traditional in many ways and slower paced than the communities off the reservation. The traditions of our people have survived and are being passed on to our children – our language is taught in the schools today and traditional dance and basket weaving have become popular again.”
