Includes the same dome as comes with the original Spun Iron Cloche, only instead of a relatively light weight iron base, the dome in this configuration sits on a heavy duty iron grill plate with handles (8 ⅓ lbs and ¼” thick).
The grill plate stands on its own as just that: a fine grilling surface.
Grill Plate Features:
Spun Iron Bread Cloche
By simulating a hearth oven in your kitchen, the cloche style of bread baker helped usher in an era of quality artisanal bread baking at home. We’ve been using a round ceramic cloche in our kitchen for over 20 years and the oblong style for nearly as long. We couldn’t live without them.
Now bring old world charm into your kitchen with this classic cloche style baker hand made in England to last for generations.
Lighter than comparable cast iron baking vessels but with similar baking properties.
Comes pre-seasoned and ready to use straight from the box. As with cast iron bakeware, spun iron also requires occasional seasoning. Simple re-seasoning instruction are included with the cloche. For best results use flax oil.
Baking bread in a covered vessel is a crucial for getting those sought-after artisanal results, especially with a home oven where it’s difficult to inject steam early in the baking process. Early steam is important for both getting good oven spring and also for creating that crisp golden-brown crust that we all love. The moist dough within the cloche creates the steam needed to produce both the crackly crust and a more open crumb.

Very happy with this Netherton Spun Iron Bell and Griddle and love that it is so lightweight. The loaves have a lot of oven spring! I was afraid it was too big, but I can get both this and the Challenger in my oven at the same time! Bought my daughter the Spun Iron Cloche for her birthday!

Absolutely love this bread baking bell and plate. I’ve gotten my best sourdough loaves to date from it — the oven spring is amazing — and best of all, it doesn’t break my back or wrench my shoulders when getting bread in and out of our very low oven. Oh, and the handle on top of the bell is perfect. If they made one that is shaped for batard loaves, I think I’d spring for that, and then start giving away all my other bread bakers!

My first loaf in my new Baking Bell came out of the oven today and it baked beautifully. I preheated both plate and cover for an hour before baking and removed the cover for the final 10 minutes. So much easier and safer than a Dutch Oven. Very weighty and substantial. I am sure it will bake forever. My new favorite bread baker!

I love this baking bell and the baking plate! While I was researching the similar spun iron bread cloche from Netherton Foundry, I came across this model with the baking plate. I emailed Breadtopia asking if they would carry this model, and I got a personal email back saying that they’d order a few for the next shipment. As soon as it was available, I bought it, and it is everything I wanted! It’s not as heavy as a Dutch oven, but not a one-trick pony like the other bread cloches. Also, I like that the baking plate has handles – very handy. I cook rotis, crepes, and tortillas on the baking plate, and when I use the bell to make bread, it turns out great! It’s easier to move my bread dough in and out of this vessel versus a Dutch oven. Plus, this is beautiful. When I’m not baking with it, it sits on my counter and doubles as my bread box. It’s beauty plus functionality! Although it comes seasoned, I put one more coat of flax oil on it and baked it off before using. No problems with sticking.
